After living in Florida for 18 years, I am very familiar with the benefit of wearing sunglasses in the rain and at night but was unfamiliar with the hazards of cruise control. Here in sunny southern Cali, we occasionally get deluged by storms and most folks are not sure how to navigate during rainy days. Here are a couple of tips to help make driving in storms more safe.

1. WEAR YOUR SUNGLASSES FOR GOOD VISION IN A DOWNPOUR

When you wear your shades in the rain, your visibility in front of your windshield will be much clearer, as if there is no rain.

Amazingly, you still see the drops on the windshield, but not the sheet of rain falling.

You can see where the rain bounces off the road.  It works to eliminate the “blindness” from passing semi’s spray.

Sunglasses are also useful in the rain even while driving at night.

2. NEVER USE YOUR CRUISE CONTROL WHEN THE PAVEMENT IS WET OR ICY

If the cruise control is on when your car begins to hydro-plane and your tires lose contact with the pavement, your car will accelerate to a higher rate of speed making you take off like an airplane.

NOTE: Some vehicles (like the Toyota Sienna Limited XLE) will not allow you to set the cruise control

Pass these tips forward – You just might save a life.
